Jimmy Kimmel vs. Jay Leno

Every night Jay has a segment called 10 @ 10 where he has a celebrity answer 10 questions.  Recently he had Jimmy Kimmel (ABC late night host) on for the 10 @ 10 and it was amazing!  For some context you should get caught up on the Conan vs. Jay vs. NBC drama.  Maybe we should all just watch Kimmel instead.

Conan vs. Jay vs. NBC

If you haven’t been following the events surrounding the late night schedule, you really need to!  Here’s the quick run down on what you’ve missed.

  • 5 years ago NBC signed Conan O’Brien signed a long term deal with NBC that would guarantee his future hosting of The Tonight Show within 5 years.  If Conan wasn’t promoted to The Tonight Show then he would be awarded approx 45 million for breech of contract.
  • 7 months ago, Conan took over the tonight show per the contract and Jay Leno moved his show to 10 pm
  • The ratings of both Conan’s and Jay’s shows struggle at their new time slots which put pressure on many local NBC affiliates because they Leno show wasn’t pulling decent ratings leading into their local broadcasts which air from 11:00 – 11:35.
  • Pressure from local NBC affiliates forces NBC to action and after totally fumbling the publicity ball they eventually decide to move Jay’s show back to the 11:35 time slot (while cutting his show back to an 1/2 hour) and moving Conan back to 12:05 and the followed by Jimmy Fallon at 1:05.
  • Left in a precarious position, Conan is left to decide if he will take the perceived demotion to 12:15.
  • Conan releases the following statement and waits for NBC to answer:

People of Earth:
In the last few days, I’ve been getting a lot of sympathy calls, and I want to start by making it clear that no one should waste a second feeling sorry for me. For 17 years, I’ve been getting paid to do what I love most and, in a world with real problems, I’ve been absurdly lucky. That said, I’ve been suddenly put in a very public predicament and my bosses are demanding an immediate decision.

Six years ago, I signed a contract with NBC to take over The Tonight Show in June of 2009. Like a lot of us, I grew up watching Johnny Carson every night and the chance to one day sit in that chair has meant everything to me. I worked long and hard to get that opportunity, passed up far more lucrative offers, and since 2004 I have spent literally hundreds of hours thinking of ways to extend the franchise long into the future. It was my mistaken belief that, like my predecessor, I would have the benefit of some time and, just as important, some degree of ratings support from the prime-time schedule. Building a lasting audience at 11:30 is impossible without both.

But sadly, we were never given that chance. After only seven months, with my Tonight Show in its infancy, NBC has decided to react to their terrible difficulties in prime-time by making a change in their long-established late night schedule.

Last Thursday, NBC executives told me they intended to move the Tonight Show to 12:05 to accommodate the Jay Leno Show at 11:35. For 60 years the Tonight Show has aired immediately following the late local news. I sincerely believe that delaying the Tonight Show into the next day to accommodate another comedy program will seriously damage what I consider to be the greatest franchise in the history of broadcasting. The Tonight Show at 12:05 simply isn’t the Tonight Show. Also, if I accept this move I will be knocking the Late Night show, which I inherited from David Letterman and passed on to Jimmy Fallon, out of its long-held time slot. That would hurt the other NBC franchise that I love, and it would be unfair to Jimmy.

So it has come to this: I cannot express in words how much I enjoy hosting this program and what an enormous personal disappointment it is for me to consider losing it. My staff and I have worked unbelievably hard and we are very proud of our contribution to the legacy of The Tonight Show. But I cannot participate in what I honestly believe is its destruction. Some people will make the argument that with DVRs and the Internet a time slot doesn’t matter. But with the Tonight Show, I believe nothing could matter more.

There has been speculation about my going to another network but, to set the record straight, I currently have no other offer and honestly have no idea what happens next. My hope is that NBC and I can resolve this quickly so that my staff, crew, and I can do a show we can be proud of, for a company that values our work.

Have a great day and, for the record, I am truly sorry about my hair; it’s always been that way.

Yours,

Conan

  • The internet is inundated with support for Conan producing slogans like “I’m with Coco.” (above)

Now we all wait and see what happens.  From what I understand, NBC will be in a breech of contract if they move the time of The Tonight Show, even if the title is retained.  As of right now, Conan now has 3 options: 1. Walk away and sue for breech of contract 2. Move to 12:05 and suck it up 3. Move to another network (allegedly FOX has been courting Conan) where he wouldn’t be pain as much but NBC would probably still be on the hook for the difference in salaries.  So in conclusion, I’m with Coco!  Are you?

Netflix, you should know better

On Wednesday, Netflix and Warner Brothers announced a deal that would give Netflix expanded rights to Warner Brothers’ film library via the Netflix instant cue but in return there would be a 28 day hold on new releases availability for rental.  The theory is that the 28 delay will be just too much for consumers to bear and they will therefore rush out to the store and buy future titles like 300 Part 2: Hey, I Thought You All Died.  (Title is a work in progress).

This just doesn’t make sense to me, let’s break it down.  If I’m not willing to spend $10 to see the movie in the theaters and I’m also willing to wait 3+ months for it to come out on video, then how is an extra 28 days going to compell me to spend $20-$30 to buy it.  I wonder if Warner Brothers will be entering into a similar deal with Blockbuster and other rental companies.  Nonetheless, even though I don’t like timed exclusives (which this essentially is) and other stunts pulled by media companies to encourage additional purchases, I don’t feel that this will have much effect on me as a consumer.  I’m just getting back into the habit of watching movies so waiting an extra 28 days won’t effect me at all.  How about you?

New Year Resolutions

It’s New Year’s Eve and once again it’s time to look back on the past year to see what went well, not so well, and didn’t happen at all.  It’s also a time to look toward the new year and the fresh start that is only hours away. We all have been tricked into thinking that the new year brings a blank slate as if the changing date on the calendar somehow enhances our ability to become the people we want to be. Truth be told, the are no special properties that make Jan. 1 different from any other day but that doesn’t stop millions around the world from treating it as if those magical properties do indeed exist.

In the past, the trendiness of making New Year Resolutions has always turned me off to the idea. The thought of millions of people who lack the willpower to make a life change on their own coming together in a collective effort of grand deception, promising themselves that this time will be better only to realize three weeks later that they are right back in the same ruts which they had just emerged from mere days earlier, leaves a sick feeling in my stomach.  The desire to be independent coupled with the pride of wanting to be able to take full credit for any future accomplishments because, “I did it on my time, my terms, my way” has always stopped me from making New Year Resolutions.  But that is the past and this year is different. Over the last year or two I have come to realize that I no longer possess the discipline needed to make the changes I want to on my own so this year I’ve decided to get over myself and actually give the New Year Resolution idea a try.

There are a number of things I would like to change in 2010 but most of them revolve around around one simple principal: discipline.  For 2010 I would like to learn to be disciplined in all aspects of my life.  This is much easier said than done but if I am successful many of the areas of my life that I would like to improve on will fall into place.  There are 3 primary areas where I would like to focus my quest for personal discipline: family life, spiritual life, and personal health.  In the area of family life I want to organize our family’s nightly routine and household duties, luckily Kari and I have already been talking about this and we seem to be on the same page.  In the area of spiritual life I really want to diligently complete a 1-year reading plan that goes through the whole bible.  Luckily the folks over at YouVersion (a free online/mobile device bible reading platform) have put together over 20 different bible reading plans with various levels of commitment.  I’m particularly interested in the chronological reading plan.  Finally, in order to develop discipline in my personal health I wanted to undertake something that was so difficult that I would need to develop strict discipline just to complete it.  So on November 7, 2010 I will be running the the 3rd running of the Two Cities Marathon.  I know that it won’t be easy and I’m not sure exactly how I’ll get it done but I’m excited to find out.  I’m sure that I’ll be posting many times about it in the coming months.  Well we are about to head out to our New Year’s Eve party so let me leave you best wishes for the new year and may you have success with those resolutions!
